The 'Garden of France'
This is by far the best way to travel throughout the region. With a plethora of towns, villages, markets, vineyards and châteaux to visit, driving allows you flexibility in your schedule. Cars are easily hired and travel by cross channel ferry is usually a popular option.
Public transport is generally good within the larger towns of Tours, Angers, Amboise and Blois. However, it is not really a viable option to travel through the smaller villages and sites of the region by bus, as routes and times can be rather restrictive. There is a good shuttle service that runs from Blois to Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont, Chenonceau and Amboise, throughout the summer months of June, July and August. The company is called La Navette des Chateaux and their office is situated on 15 Avenue Gambette in Blois.
Travelling through the Loire by train is not ideal as trains only travel to the larger of the Loire towns. Most sites of particular interest and beauty are scattered throughout the region, as are the vineyards. However, there are a few selected Châteaux that are in close proximity to the stations.
